The More You Know: Balloons and the Environment

Updated: May 3, 2021

What YOU do makes ALL the difference!

Are you curious about how balloons affect the environment? Maybe it’s something you’ve never thought about. Let us spread a little knowledge about how they can affect the environment if not disposed of correctly. There are two type of balloons, latex balloons and mylar balloons (the foil one). Latex rubber balloons are biodegradable and mylar ones are not. The main point with balloons affecting the environment lies in how they are disposed of.

It is important to always weigh down your balloons for several reasons. Wild balloons can find themselves in nature like the forest and oceans. This can cause so much damage to natural habitats of animals. Due to the damage of latex balloons in natural habitats it is suggested that people no longer do balloon releases in celebration. Mylar balloons especially are dangerous if not weighed down properly because if they find themselves flying into electricity wires they can spark and start fires.

How can you make a difference when you get our balloons?

For latex balloons be sure to throw them away properly in the trash or recycling. If you have helium balloons, make double sure that they are tied and weighed down. For the mylar balloons, they are not biodegradable, but they are reusable. You can deflate and reinflate your mylar balloons with a straw!
